Kurt Lewin, a social psychologist at MIT, developed his “reeducation” techniques in the late 1940s. These same techniques were adopted by the Chinese and North Koreans in developing intensive thought reform programs that they deployed against prisoners of war, imprisoned Western intellectuals, and against their own people in various rectification programs.
